Online Social Entrepreneurship
Executive Summary Social entrepreneurship involves business activities that are characterized by numerous charitable activities. This kind of a business is tied to primarily social objectives and not geared towards achieving profits. In the event that the business makes surplus profits, the excess is reinvested in the business or better still in the community as opposed to profits benefiting the shareholders.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Online Social Entrepreneurship specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The proposal addresses poor peopleââ¬â¢s needs to access better health care services making use of information and communication technology processes. E-Health social enterprise is anchored on the key assumption that health management, information and communication technology are very crucial to the poor members of the society, just like other basic needs. Members of the society who are not computer literate n eed to learn and embrace the tools of information and technology in the health care services. E-Health provides the poor members of the society with quality and affordable health care services and addresses the environmental problems affecting them and generally cuts down the level of poverty in various parts of the world. The Social and Business Justification Africa is a continent where most of the nations are very poor and it will not be contradictory to state that it is the most deprived one, with nine of the ten most deprived countries being its part (Ali, 2010). Our e-health programme is intended to help people of such countries. But initially, we will be targeting people from Namibia and Botswana. We plan to make use of the internet facility in delivering our services. Through internet, we will be able to reach out to several people at a time. This will be done through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. The benefit of using such sites is that even tho ugh we may contact only one person but indirectly, we will be reaching out to numerous people because the communications made will be available for anyone and everyone to read (Carr, 2001) Apart from the financial help, the people of Africa also urgently need medical aid. Their living conditions are very unhygienic and as such, epidemics keep on erupting. So a plan based on doing something towards improving the living conditions seems to be a better option.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! These two countries are Namibia and Botswana. If the E-Health social enterprise is successful in these two countries, then the plan can be applied to other developing countries. With this plan, E-Health plans to design a concept ual model that takes into account mortality and morbidity considering economic, social and political forces that determine resource allocation and management among the poor community members. E-health plans to invest in database and website development. The e-Health database will provide a platform to offer the best quality healthcare services, referrals and maintaining repeat customers. On the other hand, the website will make it possible to reach many desperate healthcare consumers across the globe (Reid, 1996, p.32). Evidence of the social end or environmental viability of the plan is supported by relevant case studies and theoretical frameworks and models. Relevant Case Study Vodafone e-Health case study for 2009 is relevant for this plan. The Vodafone case study focused on the areas of long-term health care management, healthy living and community clinics (Vodafone, 2010, p.1). Frameworks and models that support the integration of e-Health can be best analyzed by Freemium busin ess model that allows the poor not to pay for the healthcare services offered to them, while the rich members of the society are charged highly for these services. Evidence of Market, Technical and Financial Viability of the Plan These aspects can be analyzed through application of relevant case studies and theories. Like the Vodafone e-health 2009 case study, the plan is market viable in the sense that there are many poor people who are in great need of the social health care services.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Online Social Entrepreneurship specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This group of people would form a large market base for the e-Health social enterprise. Besides, e-Health is equipped with sound technical knowledge that makes it possible to reach many consumers across the globe at a faster rate. E-Health social enterprise would also manage to gather financial support from major financiers such as Wo rld Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and World Trade Organization (WTO). In essence, health care delivery models that are clinically driven can be relevant for this plan because the information and communication technology tools are based on patient-centred care frameworks that make it possible to involve all the stakeholders in participative-decision making process. This ensures that financial resources are properly utilized since consumers who are involved in the decision making process are not likely to resist e-Health marketed services (Reid, 1996, p.29). The Need/ Requirement Poor people from the developing world face problems such as lack of quality and affordable health care services. This is because, healthcare facilities may be located far away from their homes denying them easy access to modern medicine. As a result, most of them rely on traditional medicaments to counteract most of the ailments that they su ccumb to. Other problems include: lack of access clean water for domestic use, proper sanitation, good transport and communication networks and low levels of education (Field, 1996, p.49). The majority of the most vulnerable people are located in the developing world, especially the African subcontinent. Due to that, the need for medication that is affordable to all will make it appropriate to establish an online social enterprise (E-Health).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This E-health social enterprise will address health care problems in a wide geographical area since it is a global phenomenon that affects many people in the entire world and will mainly target the people of Namibia and Botswana in the African subcontinent. The Implementation Tools and Approach To provide its services to the people, the E-health social enterprise will need a team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, environmentalists, voluntary workers and even IT experts. If governments of various countries want to contribute, they can do so by providing the organization with doctors and other health experts. Medical facilities and services can be airlifted to the required areas since road transport networks are poorly developed in these areas (Tidd, 2010, p.49).This can be analyzed under the software, hosting and web service options among others. E-Health can use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Web interface for enterprise web site hosting services. Comprehensive packages such as Jav a would be used to provide database support, and they can help in providing application development platforms that allow clients to write and install forum application scripts (Tidd, 2010, p.57). The main element of our E-Health programme is communicating people around the globe. One of the better ways to make such communications is the open source application. There are several open source applications available on the internet. These open source applications facilitate communications with different people and allow mutual co-operation within groups (Chandler). BitNami is one such open source application that is deployed to the GNAX cloud. Even though the service is nominally charged, the benefits are immense in the sense that we will be able to approach a bigger community. BitNami can be useful in providing E-Health consultations to the people of Namibia and Botswana and the people can also have the option of accessing health services and information related to various diseases. I t also has commercial application deployed in-house that can be chosen for e-health services. E-Health social enterprise plans to incorporate cloud computing in its data centre platform so as to get faster applications that are easier to manage and maintain. It will also facilitate the IT resources adjustment according to the unpredictable or fluctuating demands of the business (Field, 1996, p.62). The Vision, Mission and Strategy Here, the plan focuses on the targeted people of Namibia and Botswana, products/services offered and the means to deliver the offerings. The vision of e-Health social enterprise is to provide quality and affordable health care services to the customers. The mission is to deliver timely and affordable health care services to the customers with the best efficiency and reliability and the strategy is to target the people of Namibia and Botswana in the African subcontinent in order to offer them quality and affordable health care services. The services will be delivered online through internet websites and mobile phones, but customers who are located in remote areas can get airlifted medical services (Field, 1996, p.39). The Impact/ Social Performance Measures Under this plan, the social performance measurement framework and social performance targets are analyzed. This includes double bottom line, triple bottom line and balanced scorecard, which can be used in this plan. Among these, social performance measurement frameworks, the most appropriate one for the enterprise is balanced scorecard (Reid, 1996, p.48). The marketing approach based on social performance target is the balanced score card. The Business Revenue Model This part of the proposal analyzes some of the business and revenue models employed by the e-Health online social enterprise. E-Health online social enterprise plans to use tools such as the Business Model Canvas to create, deliver and capture values. E-Health social enterprise plans to get funding from World Health Org anizations (WHO) and donations from various Non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The enterprise will generate its revenue through medical fees and consultancy services. Other means of generating revenue for the enterprise include promotional campaigns using the firmââ¬â¢s website. For instance pharmaceutical industries can promote their products in the website and in the process generate revenue for the organization (Field, 1996, p.47). Moreover the organization can get grants from local NGOs and other humanitarian organizations. These bodies can choose to finance various operations of the E-Health social enterprise based on their interests. Occasional contributions from well wishers, social media and the governments of various countries can be other ways of generating revenue for the social enterprise. To kick start its operations, the organization can develop a good proposal to request funds from big Non Governmental Organizations. Some of the Non Governmental Organizations a re Ford Foundation from the United States of America, Hidaya Foundation from Pakistan, Aga Khan Foundation from Afghanistan, and Rockefeller Foundation from the United States of America. The Marketing Approach This involves the use of social media, public relations approaches and other marketing approaches. Social networks to be used by e-Health online social enterprise include facebook and twitter (James, 1984, p.56). The enterprise can might as well use other media channels such as real time television shows. Apart from the tradition public relations, the enterprise can make use of online public relations. The latter will be geared towards promoting the image and brand identity of the enterprise at the global scale. Other marketing approaches include building business relationships through alliances with other online e-Health social enterprises so as to give the business more strength in terms of human resources capital and finance to acquire more customers as well as maintaining the existing ones (Reid, 1996, p.39). In addition, the social enterprise can choose to publish newsletters and brochures occasionally which are accessible online and also in printed form. Moreover, help centres can be established in rural areas where people will be able to get more information about the services offered by the organization considering the fact that the level of education may be low in some of the rural areas. Application of the above means will try to make sure that the maximum possible number of people from the target areas (Namibia and Botswana) understand better the organizationââ¬â¢s core value and missions. The Required Team and the Mechanisms for Recruiting the Members Since this will be an online business, not many people will be required. But those required should be perfect in their respective fields. The first and foremost requirement is that they have the leadership qualities imbibed in them. They should know how to convince people. They should be logi cal in their talks with people. Initially, the team required shall consist of a limited number of people. They shall be experts in finance, business, projects and efficient leaders. Such people can either be sent, as a help, by governments of various nations or they can be recruited online, through social networking websites viz., Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. Such networking sites are instrumental in providing useful information that is helpful to the employer as well as the employee. Both can benefit in the sense that the employer can read about the expected employeeââ¬â¢s qualifications and experiences and the employee in turn can read about the employerââ¬â¢s business (Doyle, 2011). The skills and competencies of members to be recruited in the team shall be carefully analyzed. The enterprise will also focus on selection and recruitment of the team members. Areas of key skills and competencies include strong analytical and communication. However, weakness can be witness ed in lack of ability to control emotion. Strong analytical and communication skills are very necessary in my team. Online channels such as career points and skill pages can be used in locating graduates with those skills. Besides, traditional channels that can be applied in the recruitment process include adverts in the local newspapers. Among these selection and recruitment processes, online chances would be the best for the enterprise (James, 1984, p.58). An Indication of Funding Requirements and Funding Source Options As for the funding requirements, a thorough study has to be done on the expenses to be incurred. The different account statements at the end of this report shall be helpful in understanding the details. The initial requirement of funds shall be those that pertain to purchase of furniture and equipment, building and the website. Other expenses can be taken care of from the sales revenue. The principals are planning to invest an amount of $41,750. From the given tabl e at Appendix 7, it is evident that an amount of $21,390 shall be required as loans from financial institutions and/or banks. A nominal figure of $10,020 has been taken as the initial sales figure. The amount is based on the case study that has been used in this report. It is understood that profits cannot be expected from the very first month. It needs great efforts. Gradually, by virtue of the efforts made by the employees, the sales figure has been shown increasing with each passing month. The expenses also differ on a monthly basis. It is noticeable that for the first year, the cash flow is continuous in the negative. This is a feature that is not usually witnessed in cash flow statements. The simple reason is that the income is less than the expenditure. The only major source of income shown is the online sales. The loan amount is negligible. Either the income should be increased or the expenditures should be curtailed. Moreover, in the first month, the major expenditure was un der the ââ¬ËDatabase and Websiteââ¬â¢ head. Since there was no initial capital available, the cash flow is seen in negative. To increase the income, it is a must to increase the online customers. This can be done by promoting the cause of our social enterprise on social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, urging people to participate more for the noble cause. Apart from this, help can be received in the form of loans from various companies engaged in finances to social enterprises. One such company is Big Issue Invest. The company aims at providing working capital loans, among other features, to social enterprises (BigIssueInvest). It is noticed that by the year end, cash flow has improved but itââ¬â¢s still in the negative Second year onwards, the condition seems to be improving. The figures have been assumed to be on the moderate side. However, some figures have been calculated as per the approximate rates. Like the ââ¬ËEmployee Benefitââ¬â¢ ha s been taken to be half of the employee salary. The ââ¬ËPayroll Taxââ¬â¢ has been taken to be one sixth of the salary. As for the requirement of actual funds, it can be studied under a timeline, financial projections, overall funding requirements, and funding source options. The manager of the e-Health enterprise has to write down his expectations and preferences because a deal breaker may result from the simplest idea. It is essential to ask for references from similar projects, such references should be used to provide a record of questions that the chief executive officer wants to be answered. Moreover, the conversation should not be allowed to proceed in any direction. It is important to get information that is needed to make a decision. Additionally, the manager needs to spend time documenting the requirements so that the expectations are well conceived. For example, a six month project should not be allowed to go on for more than one year (Reid, 1996, p.57). When project managers are laying out their plans, it is usually a good idea to get information from the top management. Not necessarily talking about the small details of how the project would be managed during the engagement period (Tidd, 2010, p.48). Excellence could also be manifested in project leadership. The project manager must be a confident leader for his team and should be an individual who maintains control all the times. Project managers who have difficulties in making key decisions throughout the project period may fail to keep the top managementââ¬â¢s confidence high (Nijland, 2011, p. 63). E-Health project manager who does not keep project budget on target for effective resource management should be changed. It is known that project managers; manage tasks, critical paths, budgets and several Gant charts. The ability to efficiently and effectively manage resources has a direct bearing on the project staying within the allocated budget, which is a major determining factor in the success of a project. Likewise, the e-Health social enterprise project managers should check the project status weekly for update so that people can be held accountable to the duties that they have been assigned. A manager who focuses the budget regularly may prevent the project from delays. Focusing by managers should be based on what is known, what was known and future of the expectation. These change on a weekly basis depending on the progress details. An effective manager often informs his team by providing them with continuous update both on forecast and actual budget financial (Lawrence Weisz, 1998, p.37). Since Non-governmental Organizations are no-profit organizations, they are not allowed to have equity. It means that an NGO cannot offer any share in the profit in exchange of any financial assistance. The Non-profit Finance Fund arranges funds from various quarters like affluent people, companies engaged in social services and money lending companies (Ransom, 2008). The t able at Appendix 7 indicates the overall funding requirements. Plan of Action between 24 to 48 Months Period It is vital to develop an audit team that reviews the e-Health online social project after every short period during the project cycle. The audit team should be self- dependent without personal interest in the project. Auditing should be carried on project classification, collected data, advantages and disadvantages of carrying out the project, achievements and relevance of the managementââ¬â¢s priorities (Schà ¶n, 1983, p. 23). Finally, integrative management process that meets the priority, definition, scope, mission, budget schedules, and control must be prioritized. The manager of e-Health online social enterprise must set clear conditions for schedule, budget and tasks that must be achieved. A standard contract for the signature should be drawn to allow the contract consider all the obligations. The project needs good auditing that depends on appropriate processes, e ssential setting priorities, goals, schedules, project definition, supportive culture, and budgetary control for project implementation. The lessons learned from the process should be stored so that other customers can use it. Establishing processes for terminating projects that are not feasible help in achieving objectives and goals of the e-Health online social enterprise as argued by Tidd (2010, p.54). Definition of School Essay
Definition of School Essay Definition of School Essay Children have been going to school for years and years now. The school that people think of and what it really is today has changed completely. When school comes to mind you think of kids going to school and getting an education. The safety of your children and knowing that they could go to school and you would be able to see them again when they return home. I am sure that every parent dreams of there child going to school and someday graduating and going onto college to make a better life for themselves. Another is drugs, I bet those were not big in schools twenty years ago. Well now the definiton of school has completely changed and nothing is the same. Now in schools there is a high rate of crime and drugs. Kids are doing drugs in school at such a young age now. I graduated in 2009 and I remember kids getting busted for some of the most stuipd things that you could ever think of. Kids were ââ¬Å"snortingâ⬠house hold chemicals or even super glue to get a high, then they wou ld bring it into school and get other students to try it in the bathrooms on breaks or at lunch. You also have the typical drugs like marijua and perscription pain killers are being brought to school by student who are even as young as the seventh grade. Kids are also bringing alcohol to school and trying to drink it throughout the day and sharing with other children. The drugs and drinking in the public school systems has changed so much. Now schools are having to do random lock downs and bringing in police dogs and having the school searched for all of the substances in the school. I tell my parents about what I saw in school and they never ever thought of that happening and said how much school has changed in the twenty years they have been out of school. Bullying has always happened in school but now it has come to an all time high. Kids are getting bullied so bad that children are now taking matters into there own hands, not being able to get the help that they need and taking there own lives because of kids at school. Also they would take matters into their own hands in a different way and bring weapons to school and try and kill the other student or students who are bullying them. I know that when I went to school students always just wanted to fight and coming from a good quite community I still could not believe that this was happening. The family of a Flour Bluff teen who killed himself after being bullied will never be able to see their son graduate. They say its only brought more painful memories of what Teddy Molina experienced before his death. Teddy shot and killed himself April 1, 2012, just one month after he withdrew from the Flour Bluff School District because of bullying . Since then, his family has been advocating awareness on bullying (Reyes). They found some letters written by Teddy talking about the bullying they blame on their son's death. Kids are mean and now with all of the stigmas you have out in society today it is making kids crazy. If you come to school and you are not up to date on the latest trends and what is cool you are profiled by all the other students. In school you have many different groups like cool kids, jocks, nerds, band geeks, theatre group and all sorts of other groups and if you donââ¬â¢t fit into that group they just completely ignore everyone outside of the groups. I know that these types of groups have always been in high schoo,l but the attitudes have changed and the actions. Now they are bullying other people who are not part of there group and a life ends up having to be taken, something that people would never think would happen. Schools now are trying to educate students and staff on bullying and what to be able to do if you see bullying or the one being bullied. Some of the activies now to show students about this issue is internet research to look up the different types of bullying, how to prevent it, and show kids how to be able to respond. Presentations are now given in school such as role

How to Stay Motivated in the Final Weeks of School
How to Stay Motivated in the Final Weeks of School If college were easy, more people would be attending- and graduating. And while college can be challenging, there are definitely times when things are more difficult than usual. The end of the semester, for example- and especially the end of the spring semester- can sometimes feel harder to get through than the rest of the year combined. Youre low on energy, time, and resources, and its more challenging than usual to recharge yourself. So just how can you stay motivated at the end of the semester? Try Changing Your Routine How long has it been since you mixed up your schedule? As in...really mixed it up? You might be in a bit of a funk because youre just going through the motions: go to bed late, wake up tired, go to class, procrastinate. If you need to snap yourself out of it, try reworking your routine, if even just for a day or two. Go to bed early. Get enough sleep. Eat a healthy breakfast. Eat a healthy lunch. Do your homework in the morning so you can hang out, without guilt, all afternoon and evening. Go off campus to study. Mix things up so that your brain can engage and recharge in a new context. Add Some Exercise When youre low on energy, adding exercise to your routine sounds positively dreadful. Making the time for physical activity, however, can help relieve your stress, increase your energy, and clear things up mentally. Go for a nice long run outside, if you can, or join an exercise class that youve never been to. Play a pick-up game with friends or just zone out on the rowing machine. No matter what you do, promise yourself youll do it for at least 30 minutes. Chance are youll be amazed at how much better you feel. Schedule in Some Downtime Even if you know youll be hanging out with people throughout the week, it can be hard to really let yourself relax if youre worried about everything else you have to do. Consequently, make an official night out, dinner out, coffee date, or something similar with friends. Put it on your calendar. And then let yourself really relax and rejuvenate while youre out. Get off Campus and Forget Youre a Student for a Little While Everything you do probably revolve around your college life- which, while understandable, can also be wearisome. Leave your backpack behind and head to a museum, a musical performance, or even a community event. Forget that youre a student and just let yourself enjoy the moment. Your college responsibilities will wait for you. Remind Yourself of Your Long-term Goals Studying can be exhausting when you think of all you have to read and learn and memorize and write within the last few weeks of the term. However, thinking about your long-term goals- both professionally and personally- can be incredibly motivating. Visualize or even write down what you want your life to be like in 5, 10, and even 20 years. And then use those goals to help you plow through your to-do list. Make Attainable Short-term Goals While looking at your long-term goals can be motivating, focusing on your short-term goals can also be incredibly helpful. Make simple, very-short-term (if not downright immediate) goals that you can reach with a little extra effort. What is the one big thing youd like to get done by the end of the day today? By the end of the day tomorrow? By the end of the week? You dont have to list everything; just list one or two tangible things that you can aim for and reasonably expect to accomplish. Spend an afternoon imagining the details of your life after college. Focus on as many details as possible. Where will you live? What will your house or apartment look like? How will it be decorated? What kinds of things will you have hanging on the walls? What kind of dishes will you have? What kinds of people will you have over? What will your work life be like? What will you wear? What will you eat for lunch? How will you commute? What kinds of situations will make you laugh and feel joyful? Who will be part of your social circle? What will you do to have fun and relax? Spend a good hour or two imagining the details of what your life will be like. And then refocus and recharge yourself so you can finish your semester and make progress toward creating that life. Do something creative. Sometimes, the demands of college mean you end up spending your entire day doing things you have to do. When was the last time you did something you want to do? Allocate an hour or two to do something creative not for a grade, not for an assignment, but because you simply need to let your brain do something else. Do something new and silly. Are you tired of having all of the items on your to-do list be serious and productive? Add something that adds some brevity and good, old-fashioned silliness. Take a cooking class, go fly a kite, read a trashy magazine, finger paint, get in a water gun fight with friends, or run through some sprinklers. It doesnt matter what you do as long as you let yourself be goofy and enjoy it for what it is: ridiculous. Find a new place to study. Even if youre lacking motivation, you still have certain things to do like studying. If you cant change your to-do list, change where you get things done. Find a new place to study on campus so that you at least feel like youre mixing things up instead of repeating the same routine over and over and over again. Set up a reward system for yourself. It doesnt have to be fancy or expensive to be motivating. Pick two things on your to-do list and set an easy reward, like that candy bar in the vending machine youre always daydreaming about. When you finish those two tasks, treat yourself! Similarly, add in other short-term rewards, like a snack, nice cup of coffee, power nap, or other small treasure. Drop something from your to-do list and dont feel bad about it. Do you have a ton to do? Are you tired? Do you just not have the energy to get everything completed? Then instead of focusing on how to motivate yourself to do the impossible, take a hard look at your to-do list. Pick one or two things that are stressing you out and drop them without feeling guilty. If things are stressful and your resources are low, then its time to prioritize. What seemed important a month ago may no longer make the cut, so cross off what you can and focus on what you really need to focus on. You just might surprise yourself with how your energy levels replenish and your stress levels decrease.

Vision and Rationale Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Vision and Rationale - Assignment Example They do not achieve the core objective of cleaning the teeth, which is performed by the tooth paste and the tooth brush. Therefore, due to the lack of substitute products for this purpose, it is eminent that the market for this product is existent and sustainable. Tooth brushes were first invented in China, where the Chinese used the soft pig hair on the neck to make tooth brush bristles (Segrave, 2010). In Europe, the use of tooth brush started in France in the early eighteenth century. However, tooth brush was first patented in America by H. N. Wadsworth in 1885, after which many American companies embarked on the production of tooth brushes (Jones, 2010). The bare facts is that, tooth brushing in America and many other countries was not a common phenomena, until the soldiers who had gone to fight in world war II came back having adapted this habit. The same happened with tooth paste, which was not used until the 1800s, although the Chinese and the Indians had different substance t hat they used as tooth paste (Segrave, 2010). Rationale for selecting the product Tooth paste and tooth brush have become a necessity for man since a century ago, owing to the health dangers posed by unclean teeth to an individual. Thus, this product comes in the market to serve a basic need that the society has had for decades, only that, it has become increasingly inconvenient for people to pack a box of tooth brush and another one for tooth paste whenever they want to travel. Therefore, the introduction of this new product, which seeks to function both as a tooth brush and a tooth paste dispenser, could not have come at a better time. It will solve the incontinences people have, through allowing them to travel with only one product, which will dispense tooth paste and brush their teeth too. On top of serving as a duo product, this new product will also ensure the maintenance of high health standards, through ensuring that an individual does not use more or less tooth paste while brushing his/teeth. This is because; the product will be designed such that, through a single twist of the base of the brush, the recommended amount of tooth paste will be dispensed. Therefore, there is no way in which individuals will use more or less of the tooth paste, unless they twist the base of the brush more than once, since each single twist dispenses the recommended amount of the tooth paste. Company goals The goals of the company is to solve the problem that the society has, which is that of inconveniencies, associated with the use of tooth brush and tooth paste dispense as different products. Therefore, the companyââ¬â¢s goals are: Meet the market need for a teeth cleaning product, which combines the functions of dispensing tooth paste and brushing the teeth. Provide the markets with a convenient product, which is packed singly, yet serving duo functions, for the ease of travel. Saving the people valuable time, through providing the market with an exclusive product th at saves the time used in using the tooth paste and the tooth brush as different products. Strategies to achieve the goals The strategies to achieve the goals will be to design the product such that it has a section that hold tooth paste, at the base of the brush, a lock which prevents the tooth brush from being dispensed accidentally and a dispensing tunnel, through which the tooth paste is dispensed from the base of

Ocean Spray Case Study Essay
OceanSpray Cranberries Inc is the worldââ¬â¢s leading grower owned corporative that harvests and exports of cranberry and grape fruit along with its bye-products in the form of juice, sauce, etc throughout the globe. Founded in 1912, at South Hanson, Ocean Spray Cranberries has managed to keep its brand name as the world leader in food products till date. It is only because of the various strategies it has adopted at different periods when encountered with a difficulty. In Cranberry Industry as described by Jeff Kapell as ââ¬Å"growing cranberries is not just a business, but a way of life ââ¬âthere was a sense of commitment to the land that went beyond making a profit.â⬠OceanSpray had however succeeded in balancing supply and demand by expanding acreage each year. Ocean Sprayââ¬â¢s marketing had let to an increase in the number of independent cranberry growers. When OceanSpray was at its peak in business, the government started introducing several regulations and restrictions on using environmental elements such as air, water, and soil etc., which obviously affected the supply and demand cycles of OceanSpray. The major regulations that affected OceanSprayââ¬â¢s economy were the one related to bog expansion. A bog is a type of wetland which is most suited for the growth of Cranberry fruits. However the government restricted the number of bogs to be used by growers for cultivation which in turn affected the production made by OceanSpray. The government also restricted the use of chemicals and fertilizers in bogs to grow the fruits in order to prevent soil contamination, land degradation and water pollution. OceanSpray being so committed to the society had to oblige to the regulations of the government. Thus the concern for environment by both the government as well as OceanSpray affected OceanSprayââ¬â¢s business and economy to a great extent. 2. ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN OCEAN SPRAY: In order to resolve the issues related to the environment, the Board of Directors of OceanSpray established an Environmental Committee. To co-ordinate environmental programs and develop a broad strategy on the environment a six-member corporate environmental policy was created. It was necessary to develop a formal management structure to coordinate the widening range of environmental regulations affecting the cooperative, at that time. The Managers throughout the company developed parallel environmental programs coordinated through the Environmental Affairs Team. An employee of OceanSpray by name, Neil Bryson headed the Environmental, Health and Safety activities at a corporate level. 2. (i) ROLE OF MANAGERS IN CONTROLLING THE OWNERS: Ocean Spray Management felt that the new environmental policies would be more acceptable to growers if they were developed by other grower members. The grower shall follow the practices, rules and regulations that protected the environment. The growers had already started researching on finding out alternate pesticides for their bogs to protect the wetlands. However there was a need for educating them and guiding them since the management of bog had to be done in a more professional way using sophisticated agriculture management practices. Hence it is mandatory for the managers to exercise control over the owners on practicing agriculture to grow cranberries. 2. (ii) INVOLVEMENT OF MANAGERS IN RE-AUTHORISING CLEAN WATER ACT The government as an initiative to protect wetland introduced new rules and regulations. As a result it restructured and strengthened the definition of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, an act which was related to preventing water pollution. This directly affected the bog maintenance and bog expansion activities of Cranberry growers of OceanSpray. The bog owners really started suffering because of this.As a caretaker of the growers; it is the responsibility of the management of OceanSpray to help them get outà of trouble. Hence the managers must obviously get involved directly in recommending the government to re-authorize the Clean Water Act. 3. OPPORTUNI TIES FOR EXPANSION OF CANBERRY BOG Cranberry Bogs had been developed on natural wetland areas. The bogs were formed around the margin of streams and ponds. Cranberries were one component of ecosystem. The commercial cultivation of the cranberry altered to the ecological diversity of the bog. The functional value of wetlands were recognized by environmental activists including physical and hydrologic properties such as flood protection, ground water recharge and erosion control, biological and biochemical functions and nutrient provision. Cranberry cultivation posed for developing wetland regulations. The cranberry was a native wetland plant. The impacts of cranberry production on the aesthetic and the intrinsic value of the wetland functions related to water quality and biodiversity. The studies undertaken by the growers and the Ocean Spray suggested that the cranberry bog was low in diversity. The cranberry growers protected large areas of land from urbanization. Cranberry Bog were the heart of a unique growing system that included wetlands, uplands, ditches, flumes, ponds and reservoirs. There were four acres of support land for every acre of cranberry bog. The entire Cranberry wetland system provided a diversity of habitat for many rare animal and plant species. Hence the government restricted the usage of bogs which were of high value to the environment. However, Cranberries had their best growth at their best only in bogs. The regulations imposed by the federal governments minimized the opportunities of expanding the bogs by OceanSpray for the cultivation of Cranberries. The expansion of the bogs became an literally impossible owing to the acts like Clean Water Act and Wet Land Protection Act which insisted on ,â⬠No Net Loss Of Wetlandâ⬠. The individual growers had to get approval for each and every process by both the federal and state governments which made running the entire show much complicated than it was before. Hence the bog expansion became just a dream for the growers. But by analyzing from the growers point of view, they have been into Cranberry business for generations and for them this meant something more than just making profit. So the sudden regulations should not have been imposed on them and they should definitely be given an opportunity to expand the blog. 4. OCEAN SPRAYââ¬â¢S ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM AS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE ââ¬Å"Competitive advantage is defined as the advantage that a firm has over its competitors, allowing it to generate greater sales and retain more customers. Competitive advantage gives a company an edge over its rivals and an ability to generate greater value for the firm and its shareholders. The more sustainable the competitive advantage, the more difficult it is for competitors to neutralize itâ⬠[Investopedia, Website]. OceanSpray as the world leader in Cranberry Industry had the farmers and land owners who did the job of cultivating and harvesting fruits with utmost dedication and care rather than just profit making. They by nature had much concern towards the environment and OceanSpray as an organization introduced and practiced several environmental programs. Some of the most noteworthy programs were water management which researched on irrigation techniques for the efficient use of water resource, wildlife enhancement, a program to preserve and promote wildlife, pesticide screening, a program to analyze and identify the right combination of pesticides that would both promote the growth of the fruit as well as preserve the fertility of the soil, Pesticide use that formulated the risk criteria for the use of pesticides and advised the same to the farmers as well, and finally the Integrated Pest Management Program that insisted on aspects like manipulation of water resources, maintenance of irrigation systems and the proper application of sand. This proves that the OceanSpray environment programs definitely stood as a competitive advantage to it increasing its reputation among customers and respect among government and other competitors. (c) TEACHING VEHICLE TO AIR AND WATER POLLUTION Let us see how this case study can be considered as a tool to teach the concept of Air and Water pollution: Strengths of this case that make it a teaching vehicle to air and water pollution: The module 6 of this subject covers the concept of air, noise and water pollution. In water pollution, the importance of wetlands in treating waste water and preventing water pollution is discussed under the topic; ââ¬Å"Public Policy and Preventive Actionâ⬠. This case study of OceanSpray is about the practices adopted by the growers and management to preserve wetland as well as expand their bog and productions rate. Learning this case study gives us a clear idea about preventing and managing water pollution. Thus this case study could be considered as a teaching vehicle for water pollution. Weaknesses of this case that make it a teaching vehicle to air and water pollution: This case study is about the environment management practices adopted by OceanSpray in order to overcome the troubles caused by the introduction of new rules and regulations by the government to protect wetlands and prevent water pollution. However this does not provide any informative data about the source, cause, type and prevention of air pollution. Thus the OceanSpray case study could be very well considered as a training vehicle for water pollution but not air pollution.
